Papouli's Greek Grill was borne of a long legacy of restaurateurs in San Antonio, Texas. Papouli Tom Anthony arrived in the United States in 1911, and like most Greek-born immigrants of his time, opened a restaurant. His "Manhattan Café. rose rapidly to legendary status, built upon the tradition of offering excellent food, hospitality, and atmosphere. And it is these same values that carried the Manhattan Café through three generations of San Antonians that Papouli.s Greek Grill was conceived and built. The name, "Papouli's" was chosen not only out of respect and honor for the man who inspired this third generation of Anthony family restaurateurs, but more so for the values in which Papouli Tom, as well as his son Dan, believed and instilled in generations to come.
The first Papouli's Greek Grill opened in February 2003 in far northeast San Antonio (it.s actually in Selma, Texas). This cozy location was where it all began, and from where the evolution of our future restaurants was borne. Our Forum location is still enjoyed by regular guests who drive from afar to dine in the "original" Papouli's Greek Grill.
Our second Papouli's showcased our evolving decor prototype. Opening in September, 2005, this new Papouli's served our friends on the northwest side of town. Rich colors adorn the interior of our City View location, and the expanded patio seating is enjoyed nearly year-round. In fact, our guests tell us that this location gives them the feeling that they are dining in an outdoor Mediterranean café. Bravo!
Our most recent restaurant, the biggest Papouli's yet, opened in the Alamo Quarry Market in early 2010. Featuring an even more efficient kitchen design (which means quick service for you), our Quarry location also offers a separate TV room for our guests who want to watch their favorite sport, and also doubles as private dining and meeting room. Located in the heart of the Olmos Park/Alamo Heights neighborhood, guests visit from downtown and from all parts central to the city.
Today, Papouli's Greek Grill is an award-winning restaurant concept that features the original flavors of Greece and other European countries in its recipes, preserving the robust and exotic elements of what makes Greek and Mediterranean foods so delicious. The result is a flavorful mix of high quality, freshly prepared foods that stimulate the senses and emotions of our Guests.
The story that brings Papouli's Greek Grill to life will resonate with you the second you walk through our doors. Our story is simply about robust flavors, sounds, sights, and genuine hospitality - all hallmarks of our Greek culture. You'll grasp the extraordinary value we offer for so very many reasons, yet in the end, it will always come back to the quality and genuineness of the hospitality we offer.
We can't wait to meet you!
Greeks are legendary for their place in the restaurant business. Life in the villages of Greece revolves around hospitality. Guests are treated like family and shop owners take pride in always offering their very best. My legacy in the restaurant business begins with my Papouli (my grandfather), who brought his heritage to America when he started his first restaurant in San Antonio, Texas in 1911.
In Greece, papoulis and yia yias (grandfathers and grandmothers) are revered by their families for their wisdom and hearty spirit. That's why I'm so honored that the legacy of my grandfather's restaurant was passed, to my father, Dan Anthony, and then on to me. Now, I'm carrying the Anthony family tradition into it's third generation with a new dining concept that honors our family's heritage and shares our spirit of hospitality.
Papouli's Greek Grill is dedicated to all the grandfathers who passed their legacies on to their children and grandchildren to build lasting family traditions.
